The Maudlin challenge (see this blog post for details) was a worthy criticism that spurred further development of TI. However, it is not at all the fatal objection that it was taken to be for over a decade.

Also, there is increasing recognition by quantum foundations researchers that spacetime may not be the whole story, and that spacetime events may arise from sub-empirical quantum processes.
